The Subtle Line Between Patriotism and Idolatry
Mandy and I love our country deeply. We are so incredibly blessed to live in a nation that affords us the freedoms we have. But there is a subtle difference between having a deep loyalty and appreciation for our country, and letting that country become an idol. That DOES NOT mean we shouldn't be active in standing up and speaking out for what's right.
Patriotism is a privilege, but His Kingdom is our priority.
In the ancient world, the city of Philippi was a Roman colony, and its people were fiercely proud of their Roman citizenship. It gave them status and protection. But the Apostle Paul challenged them with a massive paradigm shift, reminding them: "But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior." (Philippians 3:20, NLT).
Our ultimate allegiance doesn't belong to a flag; it belongs to the throne. When our political identity overshadows our identity in Christ, we lose our peace and our witness.
