The Power of a Praying Couple

Day 1 - Jul 11, 2022

If I had one thing to tell couples that would improve their marriage and keep it strong, it would be this: You need to pray together, then stand in faith trusting God together.

Take Action

To the Husbands:  Your wife most likely has someone like, her mom, a sister, a friend, or other women that can pray with her.  But, let me ask you…does she ever ask you to pray with her?  If she does ask, do you pray with her?  If not, why?

  • Step up and walk in the shoes of a leader. Tell your wife you would like to pray with her. It doesn’t need to be daily, but start praying together several times a week. It also doesn't need to be long or loud, just begin leading.

To the Wives: Ask your husband to pray, don't tell him to pray. Don't ask at the last minute or in front of others.  Set him up for success.  Gently, let him know that you would like him to pray with you.  Ask if he will pray for the meal, or pray for some specific thing. This will slowly build up his courage and allow the Holy Spirit to start doing a work in him.  Sometimes, men just need a little nudge.  But, do not embarrass him.

Day 2 - Jul 12, 2022

In Matthew 18:19-20, Jesus says, "Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."  Jesus is re-emphasizing a point He just made a few verses earlier about the authority God gives believers through prayer.

The phrase "if two of you agree," comes from the Greek word sumphoneo. This is where we get the English word symphony.  A symphony makes beautiful music when different instruments play together in harmony. Jesus is saying that if two people synchronize their faith in agreement toward something, God will do it—and Jesus will be present.

Take Action

The Bible says in James 5:15 the "Prayer of Faith will save the sick".  We also know that Romans 10:17 says "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God".  So, find a scripture that deals with what you and your spouse want to pray about.

  • Then stand in faith & unity together, asking the Lord to intervene.

Day 3 - Jul 13, 2022

Matthew 18:19-20 gives us an incredible promise.  It's a promise God gives when individuals come together in agreement.

Why? Because God doesn't want us to be alone. He wants us to come together as a couple or as a family.

  • The more we join our faith with other people, the more miracles God performs.

Take Action

Look at the power of Unity in these verses.  Now come together in unity as a couple over circumstances you're facing in marriage & life.

Matthew 18:20 ESV / For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Matthew 18:19 ESV / Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV / Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Matthew 18:19-20 ESV / Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Day 4 - Jul 14, 2022

The enemy always wants us to isolate ourselves, and to single ourselves off from others.

The wolf always goes for the stray sheep. When we are isolated, we get discouraged. But when we join with a fellow believer—especially with our spouse—we enjoy the power of God and the presence of Jesus.  Beyond this promise in Matthew, why does praying together keep a marriage strong?

Consider another promise. This one is from Philippians 4:6-7. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Paul says people who pray will have better emotional health. When you pray, you worry less.

Did you know the number-one marriage killer on earth is stress? It's also the top reason for doctor's visits and medication. God didn't design the human body to operate well under long-term stress.

Take Action

Are you holding things back from your spouse?   Are you thinking, "I don't want them to worry" or "I'm afraid of what they may think or do"?  That type of thinking usually creates separation and distance.

  • You need Unity, not just Union!
  • Having rings on your finger and living in the same house is simply Union.  But, that doesn't mean you have Unity.  The difference is that Unity brings Power and Purpose into your marriage.
  • Pray about seting up a good time to talk.  If needed, ask a third party to help you navigate difficult topics.

Day 5 - Jul 15, 2022

Stress depletes us emotionally and robs us of the energy to love each other.

Anxious individuals tend to end up fighting and having disagreements within their marriage.  "Be anxious for nothing" is a command, and the Bible would never command us to do something we are not equipped to do. So the next part of that passage tells us how to follow that command: We have to pray. We have to give our requests to God.

Take Action

If you're worried about money, about your kids, about your health, about your parents, about your job, about your marriage—that's your new prayer list. Let those worries be known to God, and do it with thanksgiving that He will hear and answer your prayer.

When you do, He will give you peace. He will guard your heart and your mind. He will bring you to emotional health.  God will fill your home with His peace and protect the emotional health of your marriage. Every single couple can access this same promise. All you have to do is pray.
